VOCABULARY

A. Put in words from unit 1.

1 The Tower was a not just a tower but the castle where the English kings lived.

2 It was also a prison where the king kept people he didn’t like in the dungeons.

3 In one of these dungeons there are the Crown Jewels with lots of gold and diamonds.

4 You must go down 49 steps into the cellar.

5 Henry VIII had three daughters one of whom  - Elizabeth - became queen in 1558.


B. Look at text 1 “The Tower of London ” (page 5). Find a word or expression which means the same as each of the words (1-4) below.

A. Put in the present perfect.

B. After the tour Luke and Jay went to Madame Tussauds. Here is what Luke wrote in his diary in the evening. Use the correct form of the verbs in brackets, fill in the gaps and translate the German parts.

After we left (leave) the hop-on hop-off bus at Piccadilly, we took (take) the tube back to Baker Street. We went (???) to Madame Tussaud's. There was a long queue|line (???) of people, but we were lucky (wir hatten Glück), it took (take) only ten minutes.

I don't usually like|usually don't like (usually/not/like) museums very much, but Madame Tussaud's is (be) really interesting. Jay asked (ask) two policemen the way to the cafe but then hesaw(see) that they were (be)  waxworks. We were having|had(have) a good time(???)

I haven't been (not, be) to the Tower yet – I’m going to do this tomorrow.
