Past tense sequence
The past tense sequence is used to describe real past events. It is also used in most novels, short stories, and in other fictional narratives.
Put in simple past for actions in the past and past perfect for actions which had happened before.
Maxim was not|wasn't (not, be) in love with me, he had never loved (never love) me. Our honeymoon in Italy had meant (mean) nothing to him, nor our living here together. What I had thought(think) was love for me, for myself as a person, was not|wasn't (not, be) love.
