Wenn man Fragen (engl. : questions) von der direkten Rede in die indirekte Rede setzt, wird die Frage zum Nebensatz.
"Where do you live?"
→ He asked her where she lived.
question word + S V
"Do you play football?"
- → He asked him if he played football.
if / whether + S V O
Ein Fragewort wird wiederholt; bei Fragen ohne Fragewort wird if / whether eingeschoben. Der Satzbau im Nebensatz folgt dabei dem normalen S - V - O-Schema.
Dabei gibt es folgende Veränderungen:
- Zeitverschiebung (Time Shift)
- Verschiebung der Perspektive (Perspektive Shift)
- feste Zeitangaben relativieren
