Gender Roles in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale
A Change of Perspective
Read chapters 31-39.
As the author, Margaret Atwood choose deliberately to tell the narrative from Offred's point of view. Try rewriting the scene between Offred and the Commander outlined in chapter 32 from the Commander's perspective. Include his thoughts and feelings!
Start from the line "The Commander, last night, fingers together, looking at me as I sat rubbing oily lotion into my hands." UNTIL "Better never means better for everyone, he says. It always means worse, for some." (Atwood, 1985. p. 221)
