A Change of Perspective
Read chapters 31-39. Write at least two diary entries in your reading diary.
As the author, Margaret Atwood chooses deliberately to tell the narrative from Offred's point of view. Try rewriting the scene between Offred and the Commander outlined in chapter 32 from the Commander's perspective. Include his thoughts and feelings and write about 180 words.
Start from the line "The Commander, last night, fingers together, looking at me as I sat rubbing oily lotion into my hands." UNTIL "Better never means better for everyone, he says. It always means worse, for some." (Atwood, 1985, p. 221)Changed Predictions?
After reading chapter 1, you made predictions about what would happen in the novel. You also predicted how the story would end.
Have your predictions changed? What has been different so far compared to what you expected? Has something played out the way you guessed? And: how do you now think the novel will end?
